Surescripts Broadens Clinical Network to Include MEDITECH and Vitera

EHR-integrated health information exchange connects ambulatory and acute care providers nationwide and across care communities

ARLINGTON, Va. - October 21, 2013 - Surescripts has expanded its clinical network to serve a broad range of care providers across ambulatory and acute care settings and enable greater care coordination through enhanced information exchange. MEDITECH and Vitera Healthcare Solutions have connected to the Surescripts network to provide their users with Direct secure messaging capabilities integrated within their existing electronic health record (EHR) software.  Hospitals and IDNs served by these EHRs will be able to select Surescripts as their health information service provider (HISP) to connect to care providers within a healthcare community through a single point of connectivity.

"Our business is growing to meet the evolving needs of the entire health system as it moves from a volume- to a value-based approach to care," said Harry Totonis, president and chief executive officer of Surescripts.  "Surescripts helps care providers strategically prepare for the future by leveraging their technology investment, enabling clinicians to share information with community partners, and providing a clear path to meet regulatory requirements."

With an established presence dating back more than 30 years, Vitera Healthcare Solutions serves more than 415,000 healthcare providers and provides end-to-end clinical and financial technology solutions, including innovative, easy-to-use EHR, billing and practice management solutions.

"We're committed to making it easy for our customers to connect to their partners in the healthcare system," said Matthew J. Hawkins, CEO of Vitera Healthcare Solutions.  "We're pleased to provide and support leading interoperability solutions that will genuinely make the exchange of clinical information simple and reliable."

MEDITECH is one of the world's largest EHR vendors, serving approximately 2,300 hospitals internationally, including 1,400 hospitals across the United States.  The combined user base of MEDITECH along with Surescripts' existing relationship with Epic and other EHR vendors, provides the potential for Surescripts participants to connect with more than 60 percent of all hospitals across the United States.

Surescripts is integrated into more than 600 EHR applications, connected with more than 500,000 care providers, and processes more than six billion transactions per year.  A number of health technology vendors are already connected to the Surescripts network for clinical messaging capabilities, including Epic, GE Healthcare, Greenway, Inofile, MEDENT, NewCrop, NextGen Healthcare, SCI Solutions, and SOAPware.

"Our EHR integration eliminates the need for providers to undertake multiple and costly point-to-point connections, contract negotiations with multiple partners, and other time-consuming processes," added Totonis.  "This gives them the ability to cost effectively achieve the scale needed to exchange information with valued health partners and meet the federal government's Meaningful Use guidelines."

The Surescripts network allows clinical care information, including immunization summaries, CCDs, referrals, discharge summaries and lab results, to be transmitted between providers, locally and nationally, across all technology platforms, according to standard formats, workflows, and processes.  Surescripts is a founding member of DirectTrust and continues to support Direct and other security standards and initiatives to ensure accountability and trust in the electronic exchange of health information.
