Showing Up for Patients, Prescribers and Pharmacists with Safe and Accurate E-Prescribing

There’s no shortage of innovation in healthcare. But, some of the most meaningful technology developments still have shortcomings. Take electronic prescribing, which successfully eliminated the ambiguity that exists in poor handwriting and ensured prescriptions reach the pharmacy within seconds. Despite the remarkable benefits that patients, prescribers and pharmacists have reaped, we still have opportunities to improve the process.

As adoption of electronic prescribing took off, we learned a lot about how prescribers, pharmacists and patients interact. Beyond delivering the technology and encouraging prescribers to ditch paper prescription pads, our next big challenge became clear: increase prescription accuracy.

To do so, we knew we had to bring the industry together, because the only way to tackle shared challenges is with shared solutions. When we bring everyone to the table from across the Surescripts Network Alliance in the name of what’s best for the patient, all things become possible. And the results are nothing short of amazing.

Surescripts convened representatives from across the e-prescribing ecosystem who brought their pain points out into the light. Through our Critical Performance Improvement program, the group analyzed the problems from all angles and agreed on a multifaceted approach to fixing them. And they ensured their success through an ongoing commitment to holding each other accountable. While it sounds mundane, the process of getting a hundred or so people together to fix a major problem in healthcare has been a highlight of my career.

I truly believe that if we call the right folks to the table, there’s nothing we can’t get done. Surescripts is proud to set that table for the sake of prescription accuracy and patient safety.
