NOW AVAILABLE VIA SURESCRIPTS: ONC HEALTH IT CERTIFICATION FOR
E-PRESCRIBING

ONC Health IT certification is now faster and simpler for electronic health records (EHR) vendors that connect to Surescripts.

The Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) has approved Surescripts as an alternative test method to the current ONC-approved test method for § 170.315 (b)(3) electronic prescribing. That means EHRs that complete Surescripts certification testing for E-Prescribing can now simultaneously achieve ONC Health IT certification for the National Council for Prescription Drug Programs’ (NCPDP) SCRIPT standard version 10.6.

How Does It Work?

If you've already achieved ONC Health IT certification for the 2015 Edition: No further action is needed for certification in NCPDP SCRIPT standard version 10.6.

If you have not yet achieved ONC Health IT certification for the 2015 Edition: You can present your Surescripts test certificates and an attestation document to achieve your ONC Health IT certification as long as you've been certified for all message types required by ONC, including, but not limited to:

  • NewRx
  • CancelRx
  • RxRenewal Request and Response
  • RxChange Request and Response
  • RxFill
  • Medication History Request and Medication History Response

These critical e-prescribing transactions improve patient safety and prescription accuracy while creating workflow efficiencies for healthcare providers and pharmacies. For instance, CancelRx ensures discontinued medications don't reach patients, while RxChange can be used to provide clarification on ambiguous prescriptions, alert prescribers to possible drug or allergy interactions and suggest alternatives.

Why Certify With Surescripts?

ONC Health IT certification is required, as part of ONC’s § 170.315 (b)(3) criterion and related standards, in order for prescribers to earn incentives and avoid penalties from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) based on their use of technology that facilitates electronic prescribing. By completing Surescripts certification testing for E-Prescribing, you'll now be able to meet this requirement and get all the benefits of connecting to Surescripts at once.

Surescripts E-Prescribing enhances the prescribing process by empowering prescribers and pharmacists with a streamlined workflow and more time with patients, who benefit from improved medication adherence, safety and efficiency.
