Hurricane Harvey Response

Message from CEO Tom Skelton

Hurricane Harvey has caused catastrophic destruction across Texas and Louisiana. As the waters subside, the devastation is overwhelming and recovery will require national collaboration. Amongst the many issues faced is the fact that prescribing patterns have been disrupted across the region with thousands of patients displaced and many care locations still closed due to massive flooding.

In response, Surescripts assembled a team to focus on our efforts to aid recovery wherever possible. We activated our disaster plan to ensure that our pharmacy directory is up to date and that providers remember to use medication history information via their EHR to help recover prescription information. We have been providing data and insights on prescribing activity in the area to the federal government to help inform their response plans. And, we have partnered with Allscripts to provide free access to patient-specific medication history data for pharmacists in Texas and Louisiana for a limited time so they have the information they need to make the most informed prescription decisions for patients, regardless of their location or care setting (see news release).

Thank you for your interest in our emergency medication history service in response to Hurricane Harvey.  

At this time, the service is no longer available to pharmacists in Texas and Louisiana. The service was only available for a limited time in response to the emergency.

Reminder to Prescribers of Availability of Medication History

Prescribers in Texas and other areas impacted by Hurricane Harvey are reminded to utilize Medication History data through your EHR. During a natural disaster, access to medication history data is a critical tool for providers who are working around the clock to treat patients in need. Surescripts Medication History provides access to complete and up-to-date patient-specific prescription data that can help limit errors and adverse drug events. This tool is particularly critical when treating patients who have been displaced and may not have their prescription information available. Prescribers who are unsure if this service is available to them should contact their EHR vendor.

Reminder to Technology Vendors Serving Pharmacies Impacted by Hurricane Harvey

Surescripts is working to ensure our Pharmacy Directory is updated with current information regarding pharmacy closures and is available to providers who need to treat patients in the region. Pharmacy vendors/pharmacy systems and EHRS/Health Technology Vendors are encouraged to review these action plans closely and take necessary steps to implement them in your systems.
