New Perspectives on the New SCRIPT Standard: What Pharmacies Need to Know

You’ve heard it many times before and you’ll likely hear it many more times: The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services' adoption of the National Council for Prescription Drug Programs (NCPDP) SCRIPT standard v2017071 is set for January 1, 2020.

While the deadline itself might sound familiar, are you aware of what the new standard really means? A recent article in America’s Pharmacist does a great job breaking it down and spelling it out. Lisa Schwartz and Ken Whittemore, Jr., worked together on the piece. It’s great to see two industry leaders share their perspectives on this important yet complex standard.

Essentially, enhancements from this version fall into two categories:

  • Adding new data segments, elements, and codes to existing messages such as new prescriptions
  • Incorporating new messages that allow the exchange of information not originally contemplated by SCRIPT, such as the ability to transfer electronic prescription information between pharmacies

All told, SCRIPT v2017071 makes hundreds of improvements to the e-prescribing process. The article focuses on the changes that are most relevant to pharmacies.

What hasn’t changed, however, is the increased accuracy, safety and efficiencies the new SCRIPT standard promises through E-Prescribing and Medication History. To learn more about how to complete your migration, check out this FAQ and contact your Surescripts Account Manager today.
