A prescription may look like one single event, with a clinician prescribing a medication, entering the information into their EHR and sending it to the pharmacy to be filled. But making sure that prescription is complete and accurate isn’t a single event. It’s a shared effort that takes commitment and collaboration on the parts of EHRs, health systems and pharmacies.

Key takeaways
  • Surescripts White Coat Award winners are measured and selected based on performance.
  • A complete and accurate electronic prescription requires coordination across EHR vendors, health systems and pharmacies.
  • When a prescription is written completely and accurately in the EHR, pharmacies have fewer reasons to call or fax the prescriber for clarification—which means patients start therapy sooner.

Think of the prescription journey like a relay race. An EHR vendor runs the first leg, building the software where a prescription is written, including the fields, defaults, drug descriptions and directions. The baton is then passed to a health system for the second leg that turns the software into everyday practices and determines how clinicians are trained and how fast a pharmacy's question gets answered. The final leg is run by the pharmacy that reads the prescription, catches what needs clarifying and, if needed, requests adjustments electronically.

At every handoff, there’s opportunity—and risk—for the prescription to become more, or less, clear and clean.

The 2026 Surescripts White Coat Award™ winners represent organizations that successfully completed their portions of the relay and worked together to produce complete and accurate prescriptions.

Here are four things worth noting about this year’s winners:

1. Industry-Wide Winners, Data-Driven Recognition

Most industry awards begin with a submission. But the White Coat Award is all about data. Eligible organizations across the Surescripts Network Alliance® are automatically considered based on measured performance on the Surescripts network. That’s it. There’s no application, essay or committee to persuade. Organizations are recognized solely on performance.

The 2026 White Coat Awards include two categories. Highest Performance reflects how complete and accurate an organization’s prescriptions are as of Aug. 1, 2026, while RxChange Champion reflects how well an organization advanced the RxChange transaction that empowers pharmacies and prescribers to resolve questions inside their workflow.

2. Accuracy Starts Long Before the Prescription Reaches the Pharmacy

CompuGroup Medical, athenahealth and D.A.W. Systems, Inc., build the software where a prescription is created. And Community Health Network and Mohawk Valley Health System run the clinical environments where that software meets real prescribing behavior. While their efforts are less visible to patients, they’re just as consequential.

Cleaner data upstream means fewer callbacks downstream at the pharmacy. In practice, this looks like a drug description that matches its identifier, directions that are structured and specific and an end user who understands what the RxChange request is and answers it the same day. Together, these efforts help ensure an accurate prescription arrives at the pharmacy.

3. Pharmacy Winners Reinforce the Central Role of Pharmacies in Care Teams

Walmart, Amazon Pharmacy, CenterWell Pharmacy and H-E-B Pharmacy all made this year’s list—recognition that reflects the expanding role of pharmacists. Pharmacists are responsible for more clinical services, more patient touchpoints and more of the work that keeps care on track. Pharmacies are often described as the place a prescription arrives, but that description undersells the importance of their work. They don’t passively catch prescriptions. They correct them, in the workflow and in real time.

Consider a pharmacist who spots a quantity that doesn’t match the supply or flags directions that are likely to confuse a patient. They’re not just receiving the prescription. They’re actively improving it. And RxChange provides a seamless way for that judgment to travel electronically back to the prescriber—eliminating manual faxes and phone calls. In 2025, more than 82% of retail pharmacy locations were enabled with RxChange. For most of the country, that means the last leg of the prescription relay is ready to run.

4. An Improvement on One Side of the Network Is Relief on the Other

When a prior authorization question is raised and resolved electronically in the prescriber’s workflow and at the moment of prescribing, the pharmacy isn’t left to manage the delay, phone calls and abandoned pickups. The same holds true for Real-Time Prescription Benefit. When a prescriber can see price and coverage at the point of care, the pharmacy team isn't left to chase down an answer, and the patient gets the medication sooner and at the price they expected.

Clinical judgment still matters, as does the payer’s decision. What changes is where the work happens—and who ends up waiting. Work done upstream doesn’t disappear. It moves into the workflow, where it gets handled before the patient is standing at the counter.

That’s the real payoff. Complete and accurate electronic prescriptions reduce pharmacy callbacks and faxes which helps patients start therapy faster. Last year the Surescripts Network Alliance supported 1.39 million prescribers who sent 2.64 billion electronic prescriptions. At that scale, even a fraction of a percentage point of accuracy adds up to millions of patients getting their medication on time.

Keeping Pace During the Relay

Every organization across the Network Alliance runs part of the prescription relay, and each leg comes down to one thing. For EHR vendors, it’s prescription completeness at the point of writing. For health systems, it’s end-user behavior and message quality. And for pharmacies, it’s RxChange responsiveness.

This year’s winners didn’t get here by working alone. They got here by working diligently to improve their performance and handoff.
