As I mentioned in a previous blog post, we developed the Quality Management Framework to measure safety, accuracy and completeness of e-prescription transactions.  Our e-prescribing quality guidelines educate vendors and their end-users on how to create quality e-prescriptions.  We have also created the E-prescribing Quality Best Practices and Implementation Checklist that provide practical and proven solutions for vendors to implement to help improve the quality of e-prescriptions generated by their end users.

We have received great participation and engagement from the prescriber vendor community and many of them have gone to great lengths to improve their current e-prescribing process. To recognize their hard work, we created a program that I am especially proud of: The White Coat of Quality. This award program is designed to honor and acknowledge vendors actively taking steps to improve the quality of e-prescriptions written by their end users, based on the Surescripts Quality Management Framework.

Over the years, we have realized that there is no silver bullet solution to help improve e-prescribing quality.  However, a combination of continuous end-user interface enhancements along with sustained end-user training can help us achieve our goal.  The White Coat of Quality Program encourages just that.

Each year, we are encouraged to see so many leading organizations qualify for the White Coat of Quality.  For 2013, we are pleased to award 51 EHR vendors and health systems, including a number of repeat recipients.  This year’s recipients fulfilled a number of requirements including:

  • Senior leadership commitment to a goal of zero electronic prescription content errors
  • Measurement and reporting of e-prescription content error levels
  • Implementation of software updates to reduce e-prescription content error levels
  • Communication and training for end-users on how to better utilize their e-prescribing system to reduce errors

Surescripts is committed to helping organizations achieve complete accuracy of e-prescribing industry-wide.  Collaboration is crucial to ensuring e-prescribing quality, so I hope you will join us in our efforts.   Together, we can make informed decisions to improve health outcomes, increase efficiency and decrease costs.  Please join me in congratulating the following recipients of the 2013 White Coat of Quality Award:
