ARLINGTON, Va. – March 31, 2026 – Surescripts®, the nation’s leading health intelligence network, announced strong adoption of RxTransfer, including across 4,800 Walmart locations, enabling pharmacies nationwide to electronically transfer prescriptions quickly and accurately.

In January 2026, pharmacies completed more than 542,202 RxTransfer transactions, more than double the number completed in 2025, as additional pharmacies became enabled with this technology.

These transactions often replace manual fax‑ or phone‑based prescription transfers with a standardized electronic workflow, providing a seamless connection between prescribers and pharmacists, ensuring greater access to medications and treatment continuity for patients.

“Innovation continues to be a critical priority for Surescripts, and we are proud of the growing impact of our E-Prescribing solution and RxTransfer transaction, saving time for pharmacists and prescribers, simultaneously improving workflow efficiency and patient safety,” said Lawrence King, Vice President of Product Innovation, Intelligent Prescribing at Surescripts. “More importantly, standardized tools like RxTransfer bring greater prescription accuracy and help patients access needed medications without delay, improving adherence that can lead to better care outcomes.”

“RxTransfer is eliminating one of the most persistent bottlenecks in pharmacy workflow that has traditionally required faxes and phone calls to transfer prescriptions, giving back time to pharmacists and improving access to needed prescriptions for patients,” said Walker Arp, Senior Product Analyst, Intelligent Prescribing for Surescripts. “We’re especially proud of the impact we’ve achieved because it demonstrates what is possible when we collaborate across the Surescripts Network Alliance and work towards a shared purpose of improving patient care.”

Key Impacts:

  • 542,202 RxTransfer transactions completed in January 2026, more than double the number in 2025, which totaled 201,999.
  • Nearly 25% of retail pharmacies on the Surescripts network are enabled with RxTransfer, up from 6% in 2024, according to a recent report.
  • 75% of RxTransfer requests receive a response within an hour.

These results reflect a growing shift toward digital, interoperable pharmacy workflows that reduce administrative burden, shorten handoff times, and help ensure patients receive medications as quickly and accurately as possible.

Surescripts RxTransfer is standardized to enable seamless communication between prescribers and pharmacists and provides greater prescription accuracy, workflow efficiency and patient safety.

How it works: If a medication is out of stock or if a patient is traveling or has moved to another state, RxTransfer allows pharmacists to request that the prescription be transferred to another pharmacy.
