Are you who you say you are?

It’s one of the most important questions in healthcare cybersecurity: “Are you who you say you are?”

As the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) reports, many cyberattacks on healthcare organizations start with phishing and identity theft—psychological attacks that exploit human error. How can we shore up this vulnerability? The answer is identity security.

Following the announcement of our partnership with CLEAR , I took part in this webinar about CLEAR’s identity verification technology, which validates that someone is who they say they are … before they get access to patient data.

As the chief information security officer at Surescripts, I’m always asking myself: How do we protect patient data? My answer is that it begins with individuals like you and me. Can we spot what phishing looks like when we see it? What about that dangerous link asking to be clicked? Protecting patient data comes down to education, information, and paying attention to what’s happening on the network. As I said in this Q&A, paying attention is about making sure we know who’s on our network, why they’re on our network, and what they’re doing on our network.

As CLEAR’s David Bardan says, identity is at the root of so many cybersecurity challenges in healthcare, but by leveraging experience in the “zero-fail environment” of aviation, CLEAR has brought its identity proofing capability to another zero-fail environment: healthcare.

CLEAR’s proven technology:

  • is a friction-free experience for healthcare organizations and end users;
  • adheres to the highest security standards (as a TSA-approved technology in air travel); and
  • is based on biometrics, which ensures both security and ease of access.

CLEAR’s technology is built on the federated, networked identity concept, which enables access across applications with a single set of credentials, rather than forcing end users to maintain multiple logins. This reduces the risk of cyberattacks.

Improving cybersecurity in healthcare with enhanced identity verification should give peace of mind to participants across the Surescripts Network Alliance. Ultimately, it’s not just data we’re protecting, but patients. With partners like CLEAR, we can validate that the people who care for them are who they say they are.
