NCPDP SCRIPT v2017071: CMIO Podcast breaks it down — and clears it up.

Electronic prescribing has transformed health care, boasting results such as greater accuracy, efficiency and patient safety. Standards, regulations and guidelines have been introduced along the way to ensure we continue building on what’s been so impactful while exploring new ways to improve patient outcomes.

But those changes, while incredibly important, can be confusing.

In a recent episode of CMIO Podcast, host Mark Weisman, MD, a chief medical information officer at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, Md., spoke with Scott Bonczek, a PharmD informaticist from Hartford Healthcare, to offer some much-needed clarity. Bonczek does that, and more. He explains the differences between the National Council for Prescription Drug Programs (NCPDP) SCRIPT standard v2017071, the Substance Use-Disorder Prevention that Promotes Opioid Recovery and Treatment for Patients and Communities (SUPPORT) Act and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Final Rule.

He shares some of the enhancements available in SCRIPT standard v2017071, including a longer sig length, CancelRx and RxChange, some practical advice on how to save time during testing, Hartford Healthcare’s own experience with the upgrade, and how Surescripts has helped inform and support the industry during the transition.

Of course, Electronic Prescribing for Controlled Substances (EPCS) readiness was also part of the conversation, along with how to see if your state requires it.
