In advance of its highly anticipated conference—widely regarded as the world’s largest health information tradeshow—HIMSS posed this question on its homepage: “Are you ready for the next step in health?” Based on the enthusiasm of the more than 40,000 people who traveled to Las Vegas for this year’s show, the answer was a resounding “yes!”

That same excitement and passion for innovation was evident in the panel discussion we hosted in our booth: Bringing Prescription Price Transparency to the Point of Care. Pat Salber from The Doctor Weighs In moderated a lively discussion that included Casey Leonetti of CVS Health, Dr. Lynne Nowak of Express Scripts, Neil Simon of Aprima Medical Software and our very own Tom Skelton.

Our esteemed panelists explored a number of key challenges and opportunities related to prescription price transparency. According to Dr. Nowak, “[Physicians] care about the patient sitting in front of them and whether that patient can afford the medication or whether that patient is getting the best price within their benefits. So giving visibility … not only to the cost of the medication that is the initial choice, but [also to] those therapeutic alternatives is critical.”

In November 2017, Surescripts announced plans to revolutionize the prescription decision-making process with its Real-Time Prescription Benefit and expanded Prior Authorization solutions. Surescripts has joined forces with six electronic health records (EHR) companies, including Allscripts, Aprima, Cerner, Epic and GE Healthcare, and is leveraging information from pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) CVS Health and Express Scripts to deliver patient-specific benefit and price information to providers in real time at the point of care.

Watch the panel discussion to learn how delivering patient-specific drug benefit and cost information to the point of care is revolutionizing a critical step in the e-prescribing process—all while improving medication adherence, patient care and costs. Then, take a peek at our Real-Time Prescription Benefit webpage. It’s indeed time to take the next step in health.
