How Prescribers are Saving Their Patients Thousands of Dollars on Drugs

In our latest data brief, we share some jaw-dropping early results from our new Real-Time Prescription Benefit service.

For instance, one prescriber saved their patient $8,032 out of pocket on a single prescription.

In another instance, a patient saved nearly $1,400. In fact, our analysis revealed many instances of patient savings in excess of $1,000.

Actual Patient Savings

Since its launch last year, our Real-Time Prescription Benefit service has truly taken off at the point of care. In fact, it’s reinventing the health IT adoption curve thanks to prescribers embracing this highly desired technology at an incredible rate, and enabling the Surescripts Network Alliance® to deliver real savings to patients at the pharmacy.

In addition to these impressive out-of-pocket cost savings, prescribers are also saving massive amounts of time because they are able to choose a drug that doesn’t require a prior authorization. In fact, when prescribing a medication requiring a prior authorization and presented an alternative without a prior authorization, prescribers switched the drug 24 percent of the time—eliminating more than 132,000 hours of potential wait time in one month.

With our Real-Time Prescription Benefit solution, integrated with Electronic Prior Authorization and E-Prescribing, we are answering the call of providers across the country for more actionable patient intelligence. When prescribers and patients can see what a medication will cost, along with a list of therapeutic alternatives, they can choose a more affordable option—including one that doesn’t require a prior authorization. By working together, there is no limit to healthcare’s potential to increase care quality and safety while lowering costs.
