ARLINGTON, Va. – August 20, 2014 – Surescripts, the nation’s largest health information network, has appointed Tom Skelton as Chief Executive Officer, effective August 25.  Skelton is a seasoned CEO with expertise in both the healthcare technology and healthcare services sectors.  Skelton held previous leadership roles with Foundation Radiology Group, MED3000, and Misys Healthcare Systems.

“Surescripts is at a critical point in its growth, so Tom will play a key role as we continue to perfect e-prescribing and expand our clinical network to create a comprehensive, unified healthcare system that improves care outcomes, increases efficiency and decreases costs,” explained Douglas Hoey, Co-Chairman of Surescripts’ Board of Directors.

“Tom has a deep understanding of the provider workflow, having previously led firms which develop technology products for physicians and clinicians, and brings tremendous operational and management experience, as well as a proven ability to set a clear vision for the development and commercialization of new technologies,” said Steven Miller, MD, Co-Chairman of Surescripts’ Board of Directors.

Today, Surescripts connects 70 percent of physicians and 95 percent of community pharmacies for electronic prescribing.  The nationwide health information network also connects more than 700 electronic health records applications and enables interoperable health information exchange among more than 100 health systems representing 862 hospitals nationwide.  Each year, more than 6 billion secure health information transactions cross the Surescripts network.

“The progress Surescripts has made in recent years is a clear indication of the strength of its relationships with pharmacies, providers, payers, pharmacy benefit managers, retail clinics, health information exchanges and many others,” said Skelton.  “Surescripts is well positioned for continued success as we work collaboratively with our customers to navigate the complex and evolving landscape of American healthcare.”
