In 2020, 84% of all prescribers utilized e-prescribing and nearly two billion e-prescriptions were filled. Although e-prescribing aids prescription accuracy and improves patient safety, more than 1 in 10 e-prescriptions contain patient directions with a quality issue, which can cause confusion or workflow disruption at the pharmacy.

Yet even during a pandemic that shifted priorities and operations, the Surescripts Network Alliance continued to come together to improve e-prescription accuracy and patient safety.

Since 2016, Surescripts has seen an 80% increase in the aggregated Quality Index Score for e-prescriptions across the network.

In recognition of these efforts, Surescripts has awarded 12 healthcare organizations with the 2021 Surescripts White Coat Award. This annual award celebrates leaders who have adopted e-prescribing best practices and technology enhancements that improve patient safety and healthcare delivery.

“The Surescripts Network Alliance has a unique opportunity to lead the nation in optimizing health data exchange.”

One of this year's winners, ScriptSure DAW Systems, Inc., shared that incorporating validation and checks to avoid prescription errors and avoiding any prescription issues is among their primary objectives.

As the company's Chief Operating and Compliance Officer, Adam Forman, pointed out – prescription accuracy helps with the efficiency of the entire healthcare system as it relates to prescriptions. "E-prescribing technology saves time, increases patient safety and provides a series of additional benefits. But if the prescriptions being sent include inaccurate, missing or confusing information, the effects can be tremendous and perhaps lead to an error," he explained.

Surescripts White Coat Award winners like ScriptSure DAW Systems, Inc. are inspiring other healthcare organizations to strive for their own prescription accuracy gains, moving the entire healthcare industry forward.

Gains in prescription quality means physicians and pharmacists spend less time exchanging phone calls and faxes to clarify prescriber intent.

"The Surescripts Network Alliance has a unique opportunity to lead the nation in optimizing health data exchange—an effort that takes collaboration among healthcare organizations of all kinds," Surescripts Chief Executive Officer Tom Skelton explained in our press release.

In 2020, the Surescripts Network Alliance saw a 10% increase in the aggregated Quality Index Score for electronic prescriptions across the network—an 80% improvement since 2016. Gains in prescription quality means physicians and pharmacists spend less time exchanging phone calls and faxes to clarify prescriber intent. And together, they protect patient safety, accelerate time to therapy by eliminating confusion and rework, and help ensure that patients get the best possible care.

For these reasons, we are thrilled to celebrate this year’s leaders who have adopted best practices and technology enhancements that demonstrate their commitment to improving patient safety and healthcare delivery.
