From the impact of COVID-19 to the pharmacist’s oath to relieve suffering, hear nine leaders’ perspectives on their work to usher in a new era in American healthcare. Listen to the first season of our podcast There’s a Better Way: Smart Talk on Healthcare & Technology.

As our podcast host, I ask our guests what inspires them. I ask them about innovation. And I ask how we can work together to advance healthcare. Their answers are as varied and interesting as their backgrounds and experiences.

Where do you get your inspiration?

There’s a Better Way is about how technology helps to simplify processes and support patient safety, cost and quality. It’s about improving workflows by using technology to fix what isn’t working. In short, it’s about the vision for a better way in healthcare.

Part of this “better way” involves creating a healthcare experience that puts patients front and center, as on the seventh episode with Michele Belcher, R.Ph. about the expanding role of community pharmacy.

Belcher owns Grants Pass Pharmacy in Oregon and is former president of the National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA). For her, patients are her inspiration. “Hearing their stories, hearing their struggles, hearing their needs,” she said, “gets me thinking of what we can do.”

Where are the biggest opportunities for innovation?

There’s a Better Way is about arming providers with clinical information when and where they need it, as on the second episode with Mariann Yeager about improving health information exchange.

Yeager is Chief Executive Officer of The Sequoia Project, where she advocates for nationwide interoperability and health information exchange. She said that giving providers “access to precise information without having to go through tomes of data would be huge progress.”

Convening is important to making healthcare work.

There’s a Better Way is ultimately about partnering across the industry to advance healthcare for all, as on the fifth episode with Sam Lambson about making interoperability work for patients and clinicians.

“We’re able to interface everybody’s activity into the pharmacies through a partnership with Surescripts,” said Lambson, Vice President of Interoperability at Oracle Cerner. “And we can bring price transparency and real-time benefits and other advanced applications into our prescribing workflows.”

Together with our partners across the Surescripts Network Alliance, we’re creating a healthcare experience that puts patients at the center. Together, we’re arming providers with the clinical information they need when they need it. And together, we’re working to keep patient data safe, secure and accurate.

On There’s a Better Way, hear what gets leaders like Belcher, Yeager and Lambson up in the morning and what keeps them up at night. Get to know the people who are working to transform healthcare for patients and those who care for them.

Working on this podcast has renewed my optimism about meeting the challenges we face in healthcare. Our guests are smart, driven and motivated. The nine conversations I’ve had with them truly point to a better way.

New episodes premiere in early 2023. Don’t miss them. Subscribe to There’s a Better Way: Smart Talk on Healthcare & Technology and listen on Apple, Google, Spotify, or Stitcher.
